Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is sometimes a complication of a work injury. While associated with physical trauma, it is its own separate injury. CRPS presents as swelling, burning pain, hypersensitivity, numbness, pain flare-ups, and more. Over time, CRPS can spread to other parts of the body.

Managing CRPS is already incredibly challenging for injured workers. To make things even worse, insurance companies often deny this type of injury in workers’ compensation claims. Insurance companies and employers follow standard recovery times and CRPS does not always fall into these standards.

CRPS also requires a proper diagnosis and treatment, otherwise it will make it more difficult for injured workers to recover. If a worker is not properly diagnosed, CRPS will become worse and the symptoms will not coincide with the original injury. Insurance companies may suspect the worker is not as hurt as they are stating and deny the claim.
